Other patient-related factors that may contribute include smoking, immobility, sedation, muscle weakness, and dehydration. A mucous plug occurs when excessive, tenacious mucous secretion blocks or “plugs” the airway lumen. Several mechanisms can improve secretion management and prevent mucous plugging.
